  General Notes:

The Charleston Gazette, Charleston, WV, Online Edition, 3 October 2006

It is with both sadness and gladness that we share that Ruby Ruth Gillespie Devrick of Point Pleasant passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2006. She had been a resident of Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past 4 ½ years after suffering a debilitating stroke.

She will be missed and her life celebrated by all.

Ruby was the fifth of 12 children of the late Norbon Noel and Ella Lois Buckland Gillespie of Rainelle and a graduate of Rainelle High School. She married Cecil Devrick in 1943. She and Cecil made many job-related moves, living in Charleston, Ohio, New York, Indiana, Ontario, Canada, and Mason before making their final return to Point Pleasant.

Ruby had always been a prolific letter writer, keeping in touch with family and friends. After her husband's death in 1992 she wrote a book, How It Was Back Then, in which she described life on the farm where she grew up and told some of the family experiences.

Ruby was an avid flower gardener and talented at needlework, embroidery, candlewicking, crocheting, quilting and cooking. She loved to read and kept herself well-informed about events of the world. She also enjoyed a wide circle of friends.

Ruby was always involved in church life wherever she lived. She taught Sunday school, sang in church choirs and was active in the American Baptist Women's Ministries. Ruby was a member of Main Street Baptist Church and helped with the prayer circle.

Ruby was also a member of the Mason County Chapter of AARP and a mailbox member of the Mason County CEOS Clubs.

Ruby is survived by two children, Koneda Devrick of Point Pleasant and Ron Devrick and wife, June, of Danville, Kentucky. She had two grandchildren, Aaron Devrick and wife, Heather, of Turlock, California, and Jill Utterback and husband, Mark, of Aurora. She also had one great-grandson, Quintin Edward Utterback of Aurora.

She is also survived by a brother, C.H. ?Clarence? Gillespie and wife, Frances, of Berea, Kentucky; and sisters, Vergie G. Spiker of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, and the Rev. Rachel Lee and husband, Rev. Alvin Lee of Germantown, Ohio. Also surviving are several sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews, including locally, Lowell and Terri Gillespie of Leon, West Virginia.

Visitation will be held at from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Point Pleasant.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the funeral home with Dr. Richard Sargent officiating. Burial will follow in Kirkland Memorial Gardens beside Cecil, her husband of 49 years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Building Fund of Main Street Baptist Church, 1100 Main Street, Point Pleasant, WV 25550.
