Another Old Vet Gone

Marshal Walkup, formerly of Little Sewell, bought a farm and moved to the Dawson community, this county, five or six years ago. Three years ago last Thanksgiving he was stricken with pneumonia fever, since which time he had been unfit for hard labor but kept trying to go about and make a living, until about six weeks before his death.

On Saturday, May 18th, 1918, he died from the effects of heart trouble and dropsy, leaving a wife and eight children living and two dead. The family did all it could to alleviate his suffering and make him as comfortable as possible in his last days. One son and a daughter living in Virginia were with him.

On Monday, the 20th, in the presence of a large congregation his remains were committed to earth at Soule Chapel cemetery, after a short and most appropriate burial service by Rev. A. M. Frantz.

Mr. Walkup enlisted in the Confederate Army when quite young and saw some hard service. Mr. Marshall Burns, of Clintonville, served with him in the same company. The pall bearers were Marshall Burns, George Nickell, Samuel Hepler, and George Andrews.

Mr. Walkup was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, and took an active part in church work and in the building of their new church on Bennett Mountain was a great helper.

Noted events in his life were:

• Military: Civil War: Private, Company B, 26th Battalion Virginia Infantry, Between 1862 and 1864. 286

• Military: Civil War: Private, Company E, 14th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, 1 Mar 1864, Union, Monroe Co., WV. 1273 Enlistment. Deserted 17 Nov 1864.

• Height: 6 ft. 0 in.

• Weight: 180 lb. 0 oz.

• Physical Description: having dark brown eyes, curly black hair, moustache.

• Occupation: timberman.
