Mr. [Alvaro Rupert] McClung was born January 21, 1886, at Rupert, Greenbrier County, West Virginia, and is a son of Cyrus Rupert and Rebecca (Crane) McClung. He is a member of a pioneer family of Greenbrier County, who established their home here at an early day, clearing and cultivating land, spending a goodly part of their time hunting, and gradually developing substantial homesteads. Cyrus R. McClung was born and reared in Greenbrier County, where he received a country school education and in young manhood was engaged in teaching in the rural districts. He was a private in a West Virginia infantry regiment during the war between the states, in which he saw service in a number of major engagements, and afterward engaged in farming and carried on coal operation on his farm on Big Sewell Mountain for the benefit of the farmers of that community. He died in 1897 and was buried at old Amwell Cemetery at Rupert. He married Rebecca Crane, who was also born and reared in Greenbrier County, where she was given a public school education. She was always active in the Baptist Church, in the faith of which she died in 1886, and was laid to rest in the Amwell Cemetery. She and her husband were the parents of nine children: P. W., Ada, Ida, A. B., W. A., Eulalia, Pearl, and an infant who died at birth and Alvaro R.

The cause of her death was pneumonia.
