Another Civil War Veteran dies-1933. Death takes Rev. J. A. Blagg, Civil War Veteran at his Cottageville home.
Another Civil War Veteran has answered his commander's call and has gone to join his comrades on life's other shore. He is Rev. John Anderson Blagg of Cottageville, who died last Friday at the age of 86 years. He had been in failing health for some time. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon by Rev. K. J. Schott and burial followed at the Cottageville Cemetery.
John Anderson Blagg was born in Highland County, Virginia on March 12, 1847, the son of James W. and Rebecca (Hook) Blagg. With his parents he moved to Lewis County, now West Virginia, in 1858. Soon afterward he went with them to Braxton County, where his young manhood was spent.
He volunteered as a private in Company F 10th Regiment, West Virginia Infantry in 1862 and served with distinction until the close of the war. He was severly wounded in the Battle of Droop Mountain, in Pocahontas County and this wound gave him trouble ever afterwards. He was with Sheridan at the battle of Cedar Creek and saw the ending of "Sheridan's Ride," and the utter rout of the enemy.
He was converted and joined the church October 26, 1867. In 1874, he was licensed as a preacher of the Gospel in the church of the United Brethern in Christ; and in 1876 was ordained an elder by Bishop David Edwards. He continued in the active work of the ministry for 48 years, all of which was spent in West Virginia Conference, except 3 years which were spent in Ohio and 3 years spent in the Tennessee Conference. He acted as presiding Elder, as the office was then called, for one year in the West Virginia Conference and one year in the Tennessee Conference.
He was united in marriage to Louise E. Persinger early in life. To this union was born 2 sons: Robert L. Blagg of Miami, Florida and Walter Blagg who preded his father to the homeland twenty-three years ago.
Mr. Blagg's first wife having died, he was united in marriage to Orilla Stone in 1893. To this union was born seven children: Lucille, John A., Curtis, Basil, Jean (Blagg) Taylor, Doris (Blagg) Decker, and Sheldon Neal Blagg.
There are five grandchildren and on great-grandchild. These together with his devoted wife survive him.
Mr. Blagg was the last of his father's family. All of his brothers and sisters having died years ago.
