CRICHTON - Joseph Wayne Altizer, 64, of Crichton, passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 23, 2007, following an extended hospitalization at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va., and a long battle with lung disease.
Born March 22, 1943, in Marfrance, he was a son of the late Ulysses and Lucy Caudell Altizer.
He was a 1961 graduate of Crichton High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964. He was also a proud coal miner with Westmoreland Coal Co., Sewell Coal Co., and retired from Island Creek Coal Co. in 1988.
In addition to his late mother and father, Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Ada Gay Mace; his brothers, Ulysses Jr. and George Donald; and a niece, Denise Mace.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy McClung Altizer; two daughters, Angie Stone and her husband, Randall, of Crichton and Tina Altizer of Lewisburg; a son, Brett “Jody” Altizer and his wife, Marsha, of Crichton; four brothers, Gerald Deggins Altizer of Texas, Keith Altizer and his wife, Frances, of Saulsville, Ronald Kay Altizer and his wife, Martha, of Oceana and Lowell Thomas Altizer of Mount View, Hawaii; and stepfather, Arnold Stickler of Pineville.
In addition to these survivors, Joe was the proud grandfather of Tara Altizer, Bobbi Jo “B.J.” McClung, Travis McClung, Lynzee McClung and Madison McGraw; and step-grandchildren, Ashley, Randall, Jr., and Sarah Stone.
The family will gather for a memorial service at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Youel Altizer officiating. Following the memorial service, friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Afterward, the body will be cremated, and the final disposition of his ashes will be a private ceremony at his request.
His grandchildren would like for you to know how very special their Papaw was to them: “I love you, and he loves me. I miss him.” Maddy, age 3. “He was very special to me, and I love him. He helped me with my problems. He would do anything for me.” Lynzee, age 8. “I love him. He was very helpful with my school work. He inspires me to do good. He was the best Papaw in the universe.” Travis, age 10. “I love him. He wanted me to do my best. He was a very special person that will always be with me in my heart.” B.J., age 13. “I love him, and I know he was proud of me and my accomplishments. He always talked with me about my future. I hope I make him proud. I will always be his “little glow worm.” Tara, age 16.
