Gerald David McDonald
MANNINGTON -- Gerald David McDonald, 65, of Haywood Road, and formerly of Idamay, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 13, 2003.
He was born August 9, 1937, at Wyatt, a son of the late Lawrence and Zelma Moore McDonald.
Mr. McDonald was a coal miner, having retired from Peabody Coal Co.'s Federal No. 2 Mine in Fairview with 26 years in the mining industry. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict and the Cuban Blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 31 in Shinnston and the UMWA Local 1570. Gerald was a member of the Jewel City Church, where he faithfullly served as an usher.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ruth "Inkie" Blagg McDonald, whom he married Dec. 15, 1962; 3 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Beverly and Thomas Floyd Jr., Lady Lake, FL, Lavonda and Gerald Mercer, and Melody Buchanan, all of Charles Town; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Melinda McDonald, Harter Hill; his mother-in-law, Neva Blagg, Shinnston; 1 brother, Rev. Charles "Mack" McDonald, Fairmont; 3 sisters, Lexie Hickman, Wyatt, Judy Hamrick and Lynn Rohrer, both of Bunker Hill, WV; 7 grandchildren, Meagan and Justin McDonald, Gerald and Allison Buchanan, Stephanie and David Mercer, and Hunter Floyd, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Marvin, William and Bobby McDonald, and his father-in-law, Vaughn Blagg.
Friends may call at the Jewel City Church, Haywood Road, Shinnston, from 4-9 p.m. Friday, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2003, with Pastor Robert Shingleton and Pastor John Pigott officiating. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery at Enterprise. Full military graveside honors will be accorded.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Dent-Hutson Funeral Home, Farmington.
