SUMMERSVILLE - William E. "Bill" McClung, 87, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2006, in the Summersville Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late William Scott and Florence Tyree McClung and was born at Canvas, Sept. 10, 1918.

He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's. During World War II, he was employed at Hercules Powder Co. in Radford, Va. After the war, he returned to Nicholas County and was employed as a bus driver for Reynolds Transportation as a Nicholas County deputy sheriff
and then for Grimes Construction. In the mid 1950's, he began a long career in the coal industry as an equipment operator, mechanic, mine superintendent and manager. After a short stint with Maust Coal & Coke, he had a 25-year association with Terry Eagle Coal Co., including serving 10 years as president of the McClung Construction Division. He concluded his career in 1983 as a manager for Land Use Corp.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary E. Hennessy McClung; a son, James Michael McClung; sisters, Lena Baker, Lelia Bostic and Grace Mills; and a niece, Goldie Spencer.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Shirley Hughes McClung; two sons, William E. McClung Jr. and wife, Mary Jane, and Mark McClung and wife, Fonda, all of Summersville; a daughter, Elizabeth Reynolds of Summersville; a stepdaughter, Virginia Cvetan and husband, Mike, of York, Pa.; a sister, Ruth Bailey of Radford, Va.; seven grandchildren, John Altano Jr., Tony Altano, Albert Altano, Maria Parker, Ryan McKenzie, Chelsea and Chandler McClung; eight great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandson; two step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; two nephews, Lee Roy and Paul Bostic; and a niece, Louise Adkins.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Waters Funeral Chapel, Summersville, with the Revs. Bud Truman and Damon Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow in the Walker Memorial Park, Summersville.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.
