Robert D. Lively, Light Opera Star, Dies in New York
Robert D. Lively, 37, who left Charleston in his teens for a careen in light opera in New York City and was co-author and co-director of the motion picture, "The Great Victor Herbert," died Friday in New York, his sister, Mrs. Ernestine Billings of West Charleston was informed.
Mr. Lively, whose music career began as choir boy at the First Mesthodist church (Christ), was found dead in bed at his hotel. Death was attributed to a heart ailment. He was in New York as a member of the amry's civilian film division.
The son of Mrs. Etta Lively Munn of Los Angeles was born in Charleston. He married Miss Betty Laidlaw, New York music composer, and they went to Europe in 1933, when Mr. Lively appeared as a vocalist on radio programs in London. While in New York, he once played opposite Jeanette MacDonald in Schubert's operas.
Mr. Lively appeared in many minstrels of the Charleston Elks lodge.
He went to Hollywood after his New York career and became associated with the Paramount studios.
Surviving also are two brothers, Carl Lively of New York and William E. (Bill) Lively of Los Angeles. Services were held in New York.
Robert married Betty LAIDLAW.
