Miss Betty Phipps Is Wed Friday To Joseph Briscoe
ALDERSON, Feb. 24 - The Johnson Memorial Methodist Church was the scene Friday evening of the marriage of Miss Betty Phipps, daughter of Mrs. Clara Phipps McVey of Quinnimont and the late Enoch Phipps, and Joseph H. Briscoe, son of Mrs. Alma Coffey Briscoe of Charleston.
Greenery, baskets of white gladioli and lighted tapers formed the background for the double ring ceremony performed by the Rev. Charles W. Ambrose, Jr. before an altar banked with ferns.
Given in marriage by her brother, Robert E. Phipps, of Fairfax, Va., the bride wore a ballerina length gown of white Chantilly lace over satin fashioned with an off-shoulder neckline with inserts of lace and an overskirt of telle. Her fingertip veil was held in place by a headdress of Chantilly lace and seed pearls. Her only jewelry was a single strand of pearls, a family heirloom. She carried a white prayer book with marker of white orchids and ribbon streamers.
Mrs. Robert E. Phipps, sister-in-law of the bride, was her only attendant. She wore a ballerina length gown of French blue fashioned with a lace bodice and skirt of nylon tulle and a matching stole. A juliet cap of matching lace with short veil completed her costume. She carried a nosegay of yellow rosebuds.
William R. Dixon of Charleston served his brother-in-law as best man and ushers were Lewis B. Withrow, of Charleston and William T. Simmons of Alderson.
Just before the ceremony, Mrs. Richard Lirgo sang "Because" and at the end of the ceremony, "The Lord's Prayer." She was accompanied by Mrs. Ossie Keadle at the organ, who also played the traditional wedding music.
The bride, a graduate of Alderson High School, attended Capital City Commercial College, Charlestonm and is a member of Alpha Iota Sorority and Order of Eastern Star.
The groom, an alumnus of Stonewall Jackson High School studied at University of Oklahoma, Tulsa, Okla.
When the young couple left for an undisclosed wedding trip the bride was wearing a beige suit, with black accessories and a mink scarf. On their return they will establish a residence in Charleston where both are employed by the Esso Standard Oil Company.
Immediately following the ceremony, a buffet supper was served to the bridal party and out of town guests at the home of the bride's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Bare, Jr.
When Mrs. Bare and the bride's mother, Mrs. McVey, received their guests, Mrs. McVey was wearing a costume of navy blue faille with white accessories and a gardenia corsage. Mrs. Bare wore a costume of navy blue with black accessories and a gardenia corsage. Assisting were Mrs. C. N. Hogsett, Mrs. Herman Foster of Alderson and Mrs. Wylie Asbury of Charleston.
Out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Dixon, Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Withrow, Mrs. Wylie Asbury, all of Charleston, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Phipps of Fairfax, Va., and Mr. and Mrs. Carl McVey of Wuinnimont.
