Lewisburg - Gwenivere Carey Jordan Clingman, 90, passed away Monday, May 12, 2003, at the Brier nursing facility in Ronceverte.

Born Feb. 26, 1913, in Frost, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Moomaw and Mamie Alice Carey Jordan.

Mrs. Clingman was owner and operator of Clingman?s Market and Gwen?s Kitchen for 57 years. She was a member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church and the Willing Workers? Sunday school class.

She was an honorary member of the Lions Club, and of Alpha Psi Omega and the Drama Club. She was named BPW Lewisburg "Career Woman of the Year" in 1980 and 1997, a "Distinguished West Virginian," "Mother of the Year," and was proclaimed a WVSOM honorary alumnus in 1998.

She was honored during Gwen Clingman Day on Apr. 23, 1995, was presented with the key to Lewisburg by then-Mayor R. B. Fouch, was the grand marshal for the Lewisburg Christmas Parade, and was awarded the City of Lewisburg Communty Service Award by then-Mayor P. L. Gainer.

She received the WVSOM Distinguished Service Award, was named the Shanghai Parade?s "Super Duper Pooper Scooper," and was an honorary member of the WVSOM Alumni Association. She was the incentive for the Gwen Clingman Scholarship at WVSOM, and received the Shepherd?s Center Community Service Award in 2003.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Rosewell Clingman.

Survivors include: three daughters, Nancy Clingman Deitz and her husband, Emerson, of Staunton, VA, Sharon Clingman Shiltzer and her husband, Richard of Freehold, NJ, and Alice Clingman Hollingsworth and her husband, Luther of Lewisburg; grandchildren, Emerson, Jr. and Maria Rapauno-Deitz, Timothy and Jan Deitz, Stephen and Jenni Deitz, Matthew and Leanne Deitz, Andrew and Whitney Deitz, Brian and Crey Shutzer Snyder, Adam Dodway and Heather Hollingsworth; great-grandchildren, Krystal and Elsa Deitz, Kelsey, Kayla, Michael, Jordan and Skyler Deitz, and Regan and Carter Deitz; step-grandchildren, Mike and Paula Hollingsworth Jones, Debbie Hollingsworth and David and Emily Hollingsworth Mobley; and step-great-grandchildren, Meghan and Conner Jones.

Services were held May 15, at Lewisburg United Methodist Church where Dr. Patricia Jarvis and the Rev. Julian Sulgit officiated. Entombment followed at the Rosewood Mausoleum.

Members of the Lewisburg Lions Club served as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Shepherd?s Center of the Greenbrier Valley or to the Gwen Clingman Scholarship Fund at WVSOM.

Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, was in charge of the arrangements.


Gwenivere married Garland Rosewell CLINGMAN, son of John Andrew CLINGMAN and Mabel Margaret HANGER.
