Rite Friday For Retired City Doctor
Service has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday for Dr. William P. Black, a retired Charleston physician who died Wednesday at Mountain State Hospital after a brief illness.
Dr. Black, 84, of 1520 Virginia St. E., had been a resident of Charleston since 1917.
A native of Greenbrier County, he was one of the founders of Mountain State Hospital where he served as a former treasurer after 30 years service.
Dr. Black, a former Kanawha County coroner, was a past president of the Kanawha County Board of Health, and a retired chief sergeant of the Atlanic Greyhound, the Charleston Transit Co., Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Co. and Owens-Illinois Glass Go.
He did his undergraduate and post graduate work at the University of Maryland.
A retired fellow of American Proctological Society, he was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies, Kanawha Commandery, Beni Kedem Shrine, Rotary Club and Elks Club.
Surviving are his widow, Grace R.; son, William P. Jr. of Charleston; daughter, Mrs. James E. McClung of Richwood; sisters, Miss Sanna Black and Mrs. Harry Lawson, both of Columbus, Ohio, Miss Mary Black of Morgantown;
and a brother, Hollister A. Black of Roxboro, N. C.
Service will be at the Barow-Bonsall Funeral Home with Dr. Rossing Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Educational Fund at St. Mark's United Methodist Church.
Friends will be received at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.
