CRAWLEY -- Eddie Mae Rushton Smith, 89, went home to be with the Lord, at Crawley, on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004.
Born June 14, 1915, at Andalusia, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Herbert Nelson Rushton Sr. and Alma Mae Lee Rushton.
Eddie was a homemaker. She was a member of Big Clear Creek Baptist Church of Rupert for 58 years where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, helped with Vacation Bible School, served on various committees and was an active member of American Baptist Women.
She had a passion for missions and missionary work. Eddie was a member of the Crawley Homemakers (now CEOS), a former 4-H leader and a "Rare Ruby" of the Red Hat Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, James Everette "Buck" Smith. in 1979; a sister, Annie Warren English; and three brothers, Elbert Lee Rushton, Herbert Nelson Rushton Jr. and Walter Burke Rushton.
She is survived by two daughters, Julia Elizabeth Smith Thompson of Crawley and Verna Sue Smith Bowes and husband, Bill, of Crawley; two sons, James Rushton Smith of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Lee Everette Smith and wife, Pat, of Crawley; a daughter-in-law, Susan L. Smith of Hamilton, Ohio; four sisters-in-law, Eloise Rushton of Albany, Ga., Blanche Rushton of Albany, Ga., Helen Rushton of Albany, Ga., and Ruth Smith of Mebane, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Lorrie Thomas and husband, Jeff, Lisa Lively and husband, Jeff, Stephani Bland and husband, Al, Davina Agee and husband, Mark, Elliot Smith, Jared Smith, Nelson Smith, Leah Bowes and Joseph James "J.J." Bowes; and eight great-grandchildren, Robert, David and Bethany Thomas, Daniel Lively, Julianna and Natalie Agee, and Darienne and LaDonna Bland.
"Her children rise up and call her Blessed" Proverbs 31:28. Her favorite book was the Holy Bible, and she read it over and over...
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Big Clear Creek Baptist Church, Rupert, with Pastor Scott Morehead officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.
Pallbearers will be Elliot, Jared and Nelson Smith, J.J. Bowes, Jeff Thomas and Jeff Lively, Mark Agee, Robert Thomas and David Thomas.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle.
