MARFRANCE ? Walter Oswald Walkup, 76, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea following a short illness.

He was born Aug. 18, 1929, at Orient Hill.

Mr. Walkup was a wonderful father, stepfather and grandfather. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and the coal mines. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Clarence and Gladys Falkner Walkup, and a number of brothers and sisters. He was the last surviving member of his family.

Survivors include his wife, Mable Bragg Walkup; two sons, Clarence Walkup of Lake City, Fla., and Walter Lee Walkup of Mascoutah, Ill.; two stepsons, Elbert Lee Bragg Jr. of Marfrance and Delbert Bragg of Marfrance; a daughter, Kim Deitz of Clifton Forge, Va.; five stepdaughters, Linda Garcia of Nettie, Drema Trout of Marfrance, Suellen McClung of Statesville, N.C., Lorraine King of Statesville and Jewel Bragg of Nettie; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Houston Boothe officiating. Burial will follow in Orient Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
