Sarah Susan Acord, 90, of Fairdale, died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at her residence following a long illness.
Born Jan. 23, 1915, in Saxon, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Emma Daniel Hurst.
Mrs. Acord spent her childhood in Saxon and has been a resident of Fairdale since 1970, moving from Bolt. She was a charter member of the Bolt Fundamental Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher. During World War II, she worked at Pinecrest hospital; she also worked as a tax assessor, traveling throughout Raleigh County and she also served as the postmaster at the Posey Post Office.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Waymond Acord, who was killed in the Glen Rogers mine explosion on Dec. 9, 1957. She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Asa, Connie, Sidney, Douglas and Lewis Hurst Sr.; and three sisters, Louise Bowden, Lillian Clay and Merle Brooks.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Revs. Lee Sowr and Juddy Hurst officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Beckley.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
