MEADOW BLUFF ? Alston ?Red? McClung, 85, passed away early Monday morning, April 28, 2008, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a long illness.
Born Feb. 10, 1923, at Carl, he was the son of the late Thomas Stuart and Dena McClung.
He was a member of McClung Memorial United Methodist Church at Smoot, where he often served as the certified lay speaker. Red was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II, and a member of the Smoot Ruritan Club. He worked as head custodian at Greenbrier West High School, was a former coal miner and a mechanic.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Bryan McClung, and a brother, Langston McClung.
Survivors include his wife, Betty E. McClung; three sons, Tom McClung of Clifton Forge, Va., Jim McClung of Hillsboro, Mo., and Will McClung of Morgantown; a sister, Vivian Mintreas of Moundsville; two brothers, Andrew McClung of Craigsville and Clayton McClung of Greer, S.C.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at McClung Memorial United Methodist Church, Smoot, with Pastor Larry Walker officiating. There will be no visitation.
