    • Obituary -- Roy Warren Helmick

Roy Warren Helmick, 71, of Dawson, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at his home.

Roy was a devout Christian, devoted husband, loving father, and a doting grandfather.

Born December 13, 1949, he was the son of the late Clarence Orden Helmick and Ruby Gordon Helmick.

Roy graduated from Smoot School. Roy had an unwavering love and devotion to his high school sweetheart and wife of 53 years, Phyllis (Deem) Helmick.

Roy served in the Army Reserves, and he worked at Southern States and Burns Motor Freight. He retired from MeadWestvaco after 39 years of faithful service. Roy insisted that all his children get their college education, and they dutifully fulfilled his request.

Roy was a lifetime member of Meadow Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and youth leader. Roy was a member of the local Farm Bureau and Cattleman’s Association. Roy could be found most days helping a friend or neighbor in need. Roy did not serve others for attention or accolades; he did it because he saw a need and enjoyed helping others.

Roy committed his life to his family. One of his greatest pleasures in life was the time he spent in the woods hunting with his children and grandchildren. The joy on his face as he watched his son and each of his grandchildren take that first buck was beyond words. No matter the sacrifice, Roy always made sure his family was provided for. He supported his children and grandchildren in all their endeavors in life and attended every event he could.

Roy loved his animals and was somewhat of an animal whisperer. His sheep and cattle were just like pets, following him around the field. They came running at the mere sight of Roy entering the field. Roy loved his International tractors and his farm motto was “only red”.

Roy is loved and survived by his wife, Phyllis; his son Roy (Connie) of Dawson, WV; his daughters Rebecca (Becky) Helmick of Crawley, WV, and Roberta H. Barbour (Jeff) of Roanoke, VA; grandchildren, Joshua Doss (Alisha), Matthew Doss (Bethany), Katherine Helmick, Rachel Gum (Jarrod), Kaleb Helmick (Julianna), Alexander Barbour, and Adam Barbour; great-grandchildren, Brantley Doss and Clancy Gum. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert, Vernon, Wayne (Melissa), and Keith (Pam); a sister, Helen Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a granddaughter, Danielle Doss; and a sister, Vera Midkiff.

Service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 6, 2021 at Meadow Grove Baptist Church, Dawson with Pastor Billy Pate officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. Visitation will be Sunday evening 6-8 at the church.
