Bessie Jane Crookshanks Kenney, 89, formerly of Ravenswood, slipped away peacefully, Friday Oct 6, 2017, at Hospice of St. Francis in Titusville, FL following a long battle with Alzheimers.
Born Oct. 9, 1927, on Loops Road near Rainelle, she was the daughter of Lee and Nellie Sims Crookshanks.
She graduated from Montgomery High School in 1946 and moved with sister Katherine to Washington DC to work at the Federal Bureau of Printing & Engraving making 20 dollar bills. She left DC and married in 1950, moved with her husband and 2 girls to Ravenswood in 1958.
Bessie was a homemaker and a talented seamstress. She was always willing to help and could accomplish anything she put her mind to.
Bessie attended Cedar Run United Methodist Church and was active in her Barr Run Road Community keeping the neighbors supplied with fruits and vegetables from her garden.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Orval “Tip” Kenney; her brother Leeson Crookshanks of Rainelle; and 2 sisters Katherine Munn of Maryland and Glenna Walker of Danese.
Survivors include 3 daughters Vivian (Jay) Heavner of Cocoa Florida, Joy Fletcher of Ridgeland, Mississippi, and Regina (Matt) Cunningham of Gold Hill North Carolina; 7 grandchildren Mark (Leah) of Greenville, South Carolina, Andrew, Jared, Sarah (Ben Bliss) Heavner, all of Cocoa Florida, Devon (Greg) Wojcikewych of Richmond, Virginia, Darcy (Darren) Keel of Marietta Georgia, and Cole Cunningham of Gold Hill, North Carolina; 7 great-grandchildren Elsa, Audie, and Harrison Wojcikewych, Colin and future baby girl Keel, and Clara and Madeline Bliss; 2 sisters Gladys Redden of Clarksville, Georgia and Shirley Crookshanks of Oviedo, Florida; and a host of extended family and friends.
Services will be 1pm Saturday, Oct. 14th, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, 675 Main Street, Rainelle, West Virginia, 25962 with Pastor John Wyatt officiating. Burial will follow in the Sims Cemetery on Loops Road, Rainelle.
