John Lauchie MacKay, 82, of Woodbridge, Virginia, passed away on August 23, 2023. John was born in Scotsville, Nova Scotia, Canada to Peter John Lauchie MacKay and Violet Euphena MacKay (MacLean) on February 18, 1941. He married Anava Mae MacKay (Hunter) on April 16, 1974 in Alexandria, Virginia. In the last portion of his working career, John worked as a heavy equipment mechanic and welder for 35 years and was a proud member of Local 77 of the Operating Engineers Union for over 50 years. He was also a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Loyal Order of the Moose, and the American Legion.
Whether one knew him as "John Lauchie", "Big John", "Johnny Angel", or simply John, his friends, coworkers, and family will reflect and remember his joking nature, his true and lasting friendship and love, and also, his sometimes brutally honest opinions. He would do anything to help a friend, whether it was work that needed to be done, a ride to where they needed to go, or an ear to listen. John will be truly missed by the many people who called him a friend.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anava; his son, John Rodney MacKay; and his sisters, A. Grace MacKay and A. Patricia MacLellan. John is survived by his daughter, Alison Marie MacKay and husband Wesley Morden; his sons, John Lauchie MacKay, Jr. and wife Dawn, and William Peter MacKay and wife Pamela; his six grandchildren, Meagan, Blaise, Ciara, Collin, Christopher, and Thomas John; and his three great-grandchildren, Owen, Asher, and Liam.
There will be a memorial service for John on Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 2 pm to 4 pm at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Boulevard, Woodbridge, VA 22193. There is no dress code and the family asks that you come as you are. John will be laid to rest at a later date at East Lake Ainslie Cemetery, Scotsville, NS.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mooseheart or to a charity of your choice in John's name.
