Carl Edgar Bryant, 89, of Crawley, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2012, at his home following a long illness. Born February 5, 1923, in Clintonville, he was the son of the late John Hudson and Fanny Pearl Sawyers Bryant. Carl was a truck driver for the WV Department of Highways until his retirement. He was of the Baptist faith and loved gardening especially working with his tomatoes. Carl served during WWII in the US army. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mary Etta Patterson Bryant; 5 daughters Drema Strader of Crawley, who was his caregiver, Nancy Strader and husband Dennis of Crawley, Jeanie Alshire and husband Don of Roanoke, Virginia, Sue Mixon and husband James of Wellburn, Florida and Bonnie Wallace of Rainelle; 8 grandchildren, including granddaughter Carolyn McClung and husband Ronnie of Quinwood, who helped by taking Carl to all his radiation treatments and who Carl thought the world of; 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be 2:00 p.m. day, March 26, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Jim Conners officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville. Military honors will be provided by Oak Hill V.F.W. Post #3110. Friends may call one hour before the service from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home.
