On Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, Cody F. Daniel of Fairdale died at the Bowers Hospice House following a short illness. He was in his 77th year.
Born Cody Filmore Daniel on Aug. 11, 1931, at Clear Creek, he was the fifth of 12 children born to the late Jesse Edward and Beulah Ellen Jessup Daniel. His brother, Edward Lindbergh Daniel, and sisters, Cynthia and Nancy Daniel, Mary Manning and Julia Honaker, also preceded him in death.
Cody spent his childhood at Saxon. A resident of Fairdale since 1950, he attended the Glen Daniel Worship Center. He ran Daniel's Esso Station at Fairdale for 23 years. Cody worked on various mine construction sites in the surrounding area, which led to a career with Maple Meadow Mining as a tipple operator. He retired with 19 years in the mining industry. When Cody's children recall their father, they think of one expression, "A hard worker." An outdoorsman, he loved to hunt, fish, work on the farm and garden. He had a deep abiding love for his grandchildren.
Cody's life was not always easy. He endured the tragic loss of two sons, Gary and Jonathan Cody Daniel. In September of last year, he faced his greatest challenge, the loss of his beloved wife of 56 years, Dolores "Dodie" Daniel. They would both pass away in the same room at the Bowers Hospice House, fourteen months and six days apart. And now, "Oh, Glad Reunion."
He was the precious father of Cheryl Bailey and her husband, Mike, Kathryn "Kathy" Daniel, Mary Ellen Vest and her husband, Walter, and Dewey Neal Daniel, all of Fairdale; the dear grandfather of Austin, Hayleigh, and Seth Daniel, Steven Vest and Aarin Bailey; great-grandfather of Braxton and Gage Vest; the fond brother of Nellie Anderson of Fairdale, Winona "Kitty" Quesenberry of Beckley, George and Dennis Daniel of Saxon, Terry Daniel of Fairdale and Leslie Daniel of Glen Daniel; numerous nieces and nephews, among them, a special nephew, Carlos Manning; many cousins, and one in particular, Ersil Laverty. Cody was blessed to have in his life William Rollins of Mabscott, whom his children think of as their brother. They would like to acknowledge his caregiver for the past month, David Mills. At the end of the day, Cody Daniel was a friend to many people.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Cantley officiating. Cody will then be laid to rest beside his two boys and his faithful Dolores at the Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.
Friends may call 1 p.m. until the hour of the service on Saturday.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Goodwin, Carlos Manning, Kevin Honaker, Buster Carter, Ricky Davis, Craig Daniel, Stanley and Troy Cole.
Honorary pallbearer will be Roger Ryan.
The family suggests donations of sympathy can be made to the Bowers Hospice House, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.

Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.
