Former Charleston city councilman Chester Wellington Bourne died Thursday in Memorial Division, CAMC, after a short illness. He was 78. Bourne, of 802 Beech Ave., served on the council for eight years during Mayor John Copenhaver's administration. He was retired from Westvaco and FMC with 39 years' service. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1935 with a bachelor's degree. He was a 51-year member of St. Marks United Methodist Church. He was a Mason and a member of Elks Lodge, Beni Kedem Shrine and and West Virginia Sportsman Unlimited and Trout Unlimited, Conservation Organizations. Surviving: wife, Jean Deitz Bourne; daughters, Andrea Bourne Gainer of Lewisburg, Beverly Bourne Kellogg of Naperville, Ill.; son, Chester Mitchell Bourne of Charleston; sister, Mrs. Betty Jo Erwin of Charleston. Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at at St. Marks United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Godwin and the Rev. James Fisher. officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with Masonic graveside rites. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Wilson Funeral Home, Charleston. The family suggests memorials be made to St. Marks United Methodist Church Education Fund.
