Jean D. Bourne, of Charleston, passed away Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, in CAMC.
She was born in Ronceverte, a daughter of the late E. Theo and E. Andree Fullen Deitz. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Chester W. Bourne; and sister, Edna Marie Dietz.
A graduate of West Virginia and Marshall Universities, Jean was a guidance counselor and classroom teacher at Stonewall Jackson from the 50s through the 70s, and a teacher in Monroe County and Kanawha County Adult Education for many years. In the field of teaching she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma National Honorary plus several educational organizations. She was past president of county classroom teachers associations. Active in several civic organizations including Womens Club of Charleston, Kanawha County Republican Women's Club and Women's Auxiliary of Kanawha Valley Memorial Hospital, she was named West Virginia Mother of the Year, 1983. A member of D.A.R. Ann Bailey Chapter, Charleston Women's Society, NEA, AAUW, CTA, WVEA, Wesleyan Service Guild, past chairmen of Missions in United Methodist Women, she was also a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church for more than 50 years where she was a member of the Womens Circle and taught Youth Sunday School Classes.
Surviving are one son and caregiver, Chester Mitchell Bourne; two daughters, Andrea and husband, Phillip L. Gainer of Lewisburg, W.Va., Beverly and Husband Walter A. Kellogg, of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandson, Shawn Lee Bourne of South Charleston.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at the Wilson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Monty Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Friends may call two hours prior to service at the funeral home.
