ELBERT SUMMERS SMAILES, 65, OF Rainelle, died Friday in Humana Hospital Greenbrier Valley, Fairlea, after a long illness. He was a lifelong resident of Rainelle and a member of Big Sewell Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He was a retired heavy equipment operator. Surviving: wife, Catherine Shawver Smailes; daughter, Mrs. Judy Phillips of Mechanicsville, Md.; sons, Bob of Johnson City, Tenn., Jack of Atlanta, Ga., John of Danese, Hobert and Eddie, both of Rainelle, Tim of Berkeley Springs; sister, Elsie Snyder of Huntington; nine grandchildren. Service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Wallace-Wallace Funeral. Home, Rainelle, with the Rev. Bennie Kenney officiating. Burial will be in Simms Cemetery, Lukes [Loops] Road, Rainelle. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Elbert married Catherine Elizabeth SHAWVER, daughter of Hobert Elgin SHAWVER and Audra HAYNES.
