David Lee Gilkeson, 50, of Rupert, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea, following a short illness.

Born on July 19, 1958, at Rupert, he was the son of the late John and Virgie Hunter Gilkeson.

David was known in the work force as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. He was a member of the Smoot Baptist Church. His most important challenge and joy was raising his son, Waylon Matthew, and his daughter, "Ginnie" Virginia Marie.

Other survivors include a brother, Paul R. Gilkeson and wife Sharon of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, Mark Gilkeson and wife Anne of Fayetteville; a sister, Susie Kanode and husband James of Rainelle; a special cousin, Tom Patterson and wife Karen of Smoot; two uncles, Bob Gilkeson and wife Freda of Woodbridge, Va., and Charles Gilkeson and wife Sharon of Talcott; an aunt, Faye Patterson of Smoot; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Services will be 3 p.m. today at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Jim Luchsinger officiating. Burial will follow in the McElhenny Cemetery at Grassy Meadows.

Friends may call one hour before the service from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations of sympathy be made to the children in care of Paul Gilkeson, 5528 Consul Drive, Roanoke, VA 24019.
